*A Home Land Security Detection dog, Hemi-
A hero dog dies: We just learned that 'Hemi' - a Hurricane Katrina survivor turned homeland security detection dog - died after 5 years of service with the WA State Patrol. We met Hemi in a prison shelter project after the storms and were blown away by his huge smile and his work drive and have watched him with pride since his rescue. He beat out a big-money Malinois in his class and scored his first bust two weeks into the job. Trooper Steve Gardner told us that he held him as he passed from an aggressive form of cancer. With many thanks LAWDOGS and to the WA State Patrol for giving Hemi a job and their devoted friendship all these years.
My Own Dog Has Saved My Family's Life-
The very last picture is a picture of me when I was 4 years old and of My dog Bear.
MY DOG BEAR THE PITBULL/PLOTT HOUND MIX WHO SAVES MY FAMILY'S LIFE FROM A RABID RACCOON ON EASTER, 2004!!!
My dog Bear saved my little cousin, Tori who was about 4 years old at that time and my little brother Billy who was about 5 years old. Well he saved their lives from a rabid raccoon on Easter, 2004.
It started out as a nice sunny day, not knowing that all hell was gonna break loose. Bear started barking. He barked for awhile. My dad asked "I wonder what that dog is barking at." My mom says "he's probably just barking at a deer." About a few minutes later my dad looked over and seen a raccoon staggering towards the kids who were playing in the sand box.
My dad noticed that there was something wrong with that raccoon. The raccoon wasn't showing any fear of the loud noise that the family or the dog was making. So my dad yelled to the kids "get your butts on the porch now!" My brother immediatly got up on to the porch without looking back but Tori how ever in confusion stopped and looked back then when she had seen what was going on she ran up on to the porch. The only thing that was separating the raccoon from the kids was the brush pile. The raccoon was about 5-10 feet from the two kids.
Then Bear kept barking which drove the raccoon mad. The raccoon went charging at Bear, snarling and growling. Bear got ready by leaping about 4 feet back and waited just as the raccoon got there Bear dove on him. Bear locked a hold of it and shook him like a ragdoll then slammed him. Then the raccoon got up, leaped at Bear's throat and locked a hold of it with his teeth. Finally my dad went down there to help out the 14 year old dog. The raccoon lunged at my dad and Bear grabbed him and shook him like a ragdoll again but wouldnt let go until my dad grabbed it by it's tail and had a brick in his hand. My dad threw the coon to the ground and slammed the brick on his head. It really didn't phase the raccoon, except slowed him down. Then my dad stuck a pole through the raccoons stomach a few times, which blood flew all over my dad's jeans. My dad and Bear worked well as a team to kill off that monster.
After the horror, me, Billy, my parents and my grandma had went to calm Bear down and praised him. We pet him until we noticed the weird saliva on him that we had touched. Then we realized that his throat has been bitten...the raccoon punctured right through.
The next day we took him right into the vets office to get a booster shot. The vet said that "Bear would most likely get the dumb rabies instead of the vicious rabies." Then we had to go through and get ours and they hurt like a son of a bitch. My dad and I spent a couple of weekends building Bear a 10 foot wide kennel to be quarantined in for several months.
That summer I stayed at my Grandma's because I wasnt gonna leave Bear's side. I spent the summer talking to him and praising him. Then the end of august came around I started noticing some signs that were not too good. Bear started drinking a lot of water and lost interest in food which was the first sign. I was hoping it was the heat but I knew what it was but I didnt want to think about it. Then a few days passed, he started staggering around, tripping over his food dishes. I knew that was a second sign, but again I didnt want to think about it. About the begining of september he started having fluid leak from his eyes and he acted really dumb and lost. The vet was right.
Then I had to go home to get ready for school. I had to get my school supplies ready for 8th grade. On September 7th, 2004 my mom got a phone call, I woke up and over heard my mom talking to my grandma. My mom looked over at me and frowned, when she did that I knew something had happened but I wasn't thinking. Then my mom told me without trying to cry herself saying that "my grandma went to check on Bear this morning and found him dead." I immediatly started crying. Then I said "why does my Best Friend, my Brother, my Dog have to be gone!...why?" Then I stopped what I was doing not saying a word and just started having flashbacks. Flashbacks of the years of memories that we had shared together. The memories of when I used to make mud pies with Bear during the summer, I got my first bee sting from the bees nest on his dog house. The memories me and Bear have shared since I was two years old. The age I was old enough to be around him by myself in any kind of weather. Then back to reality, I started crying again.
After Bear's death, me, my brother, and cousin Tori got a balloon. I wrote a letter on mine saying "Thanks Bear for saving the family." "You are our HERO." "Bear, I Love You Big Brother." My brother, Billy and our cousin Tori both drew a picture for thier balloons. Then we let them go. Bear's rabie vaccine was up 2 weeks after the fact he got bit...the vet said the vaccines are not 100% effective. This was how we learned that even when your pet gets vaccinated doesnt mean that they would never come down with anything.
Every Easter, I say the prayer before we eat. I say "thank you lord for having my family here today in great health and also thank you for this delicious meal. Most important of all thank you for giving us such a wonderful dog that risked his life to saved the family. That dog is now a Hero and if it wasnt for him, that day would have been an even worse tragedy than what it was. Thank You Bear we miss you and Thank you lord. Amen"
I usually dont do that type of stuff...I usually let the adults or little kids do it but now that holiday I say it and maybe if one of the kids want to say something I let them. After all Bear did save their lives and he was my dog. I know what could have happened if Bear wasnt there. Ill tell you what could have happened. Well since it was the dogs bark that alarmed the family that something was there and had triggered the raccoon to go banannas and charge at him...away from the family. If he wasnt there noone would have known, so there for one of the kids could have been torn up because the raccoon was walking right towards them. If one of the kids would have gotten torn up then that means my Dad and the rest of the adults would have to get involved. So Bear is a HERO and a very trustworthy dog around any kid in any kind of weather. Thats why I consider him my big brother.

~Dog Hero! Pit Bull Saves His Family From Intruder~
Mar 24 2009 7:45am
An Oklahoma family credits their dog DBoy with protecting them from a gun-wielding intruder who barged into their home. Roberta Trawick says her pit bull leapt to defend her and her family. The intruder, who is still at large, "came in, pointed a gun at me and said, ‘Get down on the ground'," Trawick told Oklahoma City’s News 9. Then, Trawick says DBoy immediately ran in from another room and was ready to attack. The gunman shot DBoy three times -- twice in the head -- before running off after apparently being spooked by the dog. "It is amazing, it's amazing that he went after that guy, and that I still have a family," family member Angelic Shoemaker told News 9. "The vet said if it wasn't for his hard head he wouldn't be here," Trawick said. The family was able to pay for DBoy’s medical bills through donations, the report said. "I'm sorry my dog got shot, but I still got my family and we still got our dog," a tearful Shoemaker told News 9. Trawick's father reportedly rescued 2-year-old dog from an abusive home just three months before the break-in.
